Why Krishna Lifts Govardhan Hill? A Story of Love and Protection
In the beautiful village of Vrindavan, people worshipped Indra, the god of rain. Every year, they held a festival called Indra Yagna to pray for good rains. It was a big celebration with many offerings and prayers.
One day, young Krishna asked his father, Nanda, "Why do we worship Indra?" Nanda explained that Indra gave them rain, which helped their crops and cattle. But Krishna smiled and said, "It is Govardhan Hill that provides us with grass, water, and fertile soil. We should thank the hill instead."
Krishna’s Persuasion
Krishna told the villagers, "We should worship Govardhan Hill, not out of fear of Indra, but out of gratitude for what truly sustains us." The villagers agreed and celebrated Govardhan Hill with a grand feast, prayers, and decorations.
Indra’s Anger
Indra became very angry when he saw that the villagers had stopped worshipping him. He sent heavy rains and thunderstorms to destroy Vrindavan. The rivers overflowed, and the whole village was flooded.
Krishna’s Divine Act
The frightened villagers ran to Krishna for help. Krishna smiled and said, "Do not worry, I will protect you." He then walked to the foot of Govardhan Hill, a massive mountain that stood tall and majestic. To everyone’s surprise, he lifted the entire hill with just one hand, as effortlessly as a child lifting a toy.
For seven days and nights, Krishna held up the hill, sheltering the people and animals of Vrindavan from the storm.
Indra’s Realization
After seven days, Indra realized that Krishna was no ordinary boy but the Supreme Lord himself. Humbled, he stopped the storm and came down to ask for Krishna’s forgiveness.
Indra bowed and said, "O Lord, I was blinded by pride and anger. Please forgive my arrogance. You have shown me the true meaning of divinity and humility" Krishna, full of kindness, forgave him and gently placed Govardhan Hill back in its place.
